Hosting Thanksgiving in Los Angeles? Clear the Space Before the Guests Arrive

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26. Here is a simple plan for freeing up the spare room, the garage and the dining room, plus what to do with the leftovers afterward.

With Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, you have about three and a half weeks, and the hosts who feel calm on the day are the ones who cleared the big stuff early. The spare room that turned into storage, the garage that has quietly become a closet, and the corner of the dining room that never got sorted are what actually get in the way. Here is a plan that works backward from the holiday.

Where the clutter actually hurts

  • The spare room. If someone is staying over, this is the one space that has to be usable. Exercise equipment, old desks and stacked boxes are the usual blockers.
  • The dining room and living room. You need room for extra chairs and a table that can be extended. A piece of furniture you never use takes up that space for no reason.
  • The garage. Guests park, coats go in, and sooner or later someone opens the garage door. A garage you can walk through is worth the effort even if nobody is supposed to go in.
  • The entry and the path to the kitchen. Shoes, bags and boxes by the door get noticed first.

A simple plan, working backward

  • This week and next: pick the single biggest pile and deal with it first. Sort into keep, donate and gone, and skip the “maybe” pile.
  • About two weeks out: drop off donations and book anything that needs a truck. Free charity pickups tend to schedule a few weeks ahead, so do not leave it for the last week.
  • Thanksgiving week: no hauling. This week is for cooking, cleaning and setting the table.

Leftovers: the green bin is built for this

If you live in the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation requires residents to use the green bin for food waste and yard waste. It accepts food scraps including peels, bones, meat, fish, dairy and eggshells, plus food-soiled paper such as napkins and pizza boxes. Keep plastic bags and pet waste out of it — those go in the black bin. That means the turkey carcass, the trimmings and the greasy napkins from the weekend do not need to go in the regular trash.

Furniture and bulky items in the way

An old couch, a broken chair or a dresser nobody uses is the kind of thing that sits in a spare room for years. The City’s bulky item pickup is free for homes it serves, and we explain how it works and its catches in our LA bulky item pickup guide. The main catch is timing: it happens on your regular trash day, so it needs to be booked ahead.

When it makes sense to call us

If the pile is bigger than a few items, if there are stairs involved, or if you simply do not have the weeks to wait, one pickup clears everything in a single trip. We book same-day in most of Los Angeles, and you get a firm price on site before anything is loaded. Texting a photo ahead of time is the fastest way to get a number.

A note for January

The week after the holidays is when new boxes, wrapping and the old furniture someone replaced pile up. If you clear your space now, you will have room to put them where they belong.
