How LA Bulky Item Pickup Works (and When to Use It)

The City of Los Angeles collects bulky household items free from residents through LA Sanitation, requested by calling 311 or using the MyLA311 app. It is a genuinely good service, it costs nothing, and for a single item with no deadline it is almost always the right answer.

How to book it

Call 311, use the MyLA311 app, or request online. You will be given a collection date and told where to place the items. Surrounding cities — Santa Monica, Long Beach, Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale and others — run their own programmes with their own rules, so confirm which authority actually serves your address.

What they generally take

Furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet and other large household items. What is excluded varies but typically includes construction debris, hazardous waste, and commercial quantities from a business.

The three catches

The wait. Commonly two to three weeks, and longer at peak times. If you have a move-out date, an escrow close or a tenant arriving, that gap is the problem.

You have to move it yourself. Items must be at the kerb. If your mattress is on the third floor of a walk-up, the free service does not help you get it down.

Kerbside timing rules. Several LA-area cities cite residents for placing bulky items out too early. Check how far in advance yours permits it — leaving a sofa on the pavement for a fortnight can cost you a fine and, in HOA properties, a violation notice.

When the free option is the right one

One or two items. No deadline. Ground floor or you have help. No HOA restriction on kerbside storage. In that situation, call 311 and keep your money.

We tell people this on the phone regularly. A company that takes $99 for something the city will do free in a fortnight is not one you should call again.

When it is not

• A deadline — moving, escrow, a tenant turnover, an inspection
• Items that cannot be carried out by the people who live there
• A volume beyond what the programme accepts
• Anything excluded — construction debris in particular
• An HOA or building that prohibits kerbside placement entirely
• A property being listed, where a sofa on the kerb is in every photograph
