How to Clear Out a Garage in One Day

A packed two-car garage takes a crew about three hours. Doing it yourself takes a weekend. Either way, this is the order of operations that works.

A packed two-car garage is a full truck of material and takes a professional crew ninety minutes to three hours. Doing it alone is realistically a weekend. The single biggest predictor of whether it gets finished is whether you sort by decision speed rather than by category.

Sort by decision speed, not by type

The usual advice is to sort into keep, donate, sell and dump. In practice people stall on the sell pile, then stall on the whole project. A better first pass is: obvious junk, obvious keep, and needs a decision. Clear the obvious junk first — it is usually 40% of the volume and creates the floor space that makes everything else possible.

The order that works

  1. Empty the middle. Get anything not on a shelf out to the driveway. You cannot make decisions about things you cannot see.
  2. Obvious junk goes first. Broken, mouldy, rusted, missing parts. No deliberation.
  3. Then the shelving contents. By shelf, not by category. Finishing a shelf gives you visible progress; “all the paint” does not.
  4. Then the decisions. With the space clear, the maybe pile shrinks dramatically on its own.
  5. Then the shelving itself, if it is going.
  6. Sweep. Ten minutes, and it is what makes it feel finished.

Set aside before anyone arrives

Paint, motor oil, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks and car batteries cannot go in a junk removal truck — they are household hazardous waste. Put them in one corner. All three Southern California counties run free HHW drop-offs for residents. Tyres can be taken but carry a small state-mandated per-tyre fee.

Things worth checking before they go

  • Tools. Old hand tools and vintage power tools have real resale value.
  • Bicycles. Even non-working bikes are wanted by community repair programmes across LA and San Diego.
  • Sports and camping gear. Serviceable equipment is in constant demand at youth programmes.
  • Boxes of paper. Deeds, titles, bonds and photographs end up in garages. Do not bulk-bin paper without a look.

What it costs to have it done

A one-car garage typically runs $250–$499. A packed two-car garage is usually a full truck at $899. That includes the sorting help, the carrying, the disposal, and donation routing for anything usable — and it happens in an afternoon rather than across a weekend you were planning to spend otherwise.
