Move-Out Cleanout Checklist
What to clear, in what order, and when to book removal so it does not collide with your moving date.
Book your junk removal for two to three days before the movers, not after. The most common move-out mistake is paying a moving company to transport things you were always going to throw away, then paying again to dispose of them at the other end.
Six weeks out
Walk every room and every storage space and identify what is not coming with you. Garage, attic, shed, storage locker, the back of every wardrobe. You are not moving anything yet — you are building a list.
This is also the moment to book a charity collection if you want one, because free charity pickups schedule two to four weeks out.
Three weeks out
Sell anything with real value. Furniture, appliances, tools and exercise equipment all move on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, but they need time. Anything unsold in ten days is not going to sell — move it to the donate or dispose pile and stop thinking about it.
Two weeks out
Take hazardous items to a county household hazardous waste facility: paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane. No mover and no junk removal company can take these, and they are the items most often abandoned in a garage at handover, which lands on your deposit.
One week out
Confirm the removal booking. Ideally two to three days before the movers arrive, so the house is already clear of everything not making the trip.
Two to three days out — the removal
Everything not coming with you goes. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, garage contents, yard waste. What is left is only what the movers are taking, which makes their job faster and their invoice smaller.
Moving day
After the truck leaves, walk the property once more. The things left behind are almost always in the same places: the top shelf of a wardrobe, behind the water heater, the side return, the loft hatch, the back of the garden shed.
If you are renting
Photograph every room after it is empty, with the date visible. Deposit disputes are decided on evidence, and “it was clean when I left” carries no weight against a landlord’s photographs. If anything was left behind by agreement, get that in writing.
If you are selling
Clear before the photographs, not after. A cluttered listing photographs badly and sells for less, and no amount of staging fixes a full garage. Realtors book us backwards from the photography date for exactly this reason.
