How to Prepare for a Junk Removal Appointment

Ten minutes of preparation makes the job faster, cheaper and less stressful. Here is exactly what to do.

You do not need to move anything to the kerb, but three things genuinely help: separate out hazardous items, clear a path, and know what is staying. Ten minutes of preparation is the difference between a smooth job and a confused one.

Before the crew arrives

  1. Set aside anything hazardous. Paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks, car batteries. These cannot legally go in the truck. One corner is fine.
  2. Decide what stays. The most common cause of an awkward moment is an item nobody was sure about. Masking tape, a sticky note or simply pointing works.
  3. Clear the path. Move cars off the driveway, unlock the side gate, prop the garage door. The route matters more than the pile.
  4. Check for valuables one last time. Cash in books, jewellery in coat pockets, documents taped inside drawers. Our crews set aside anything that looks personal, but you know what you are looking for and we do not.
  5. Photograph anything you may need a record of. Landlords and executors in particular should document before anything moves.

What you do not need to do

  • Do not drag things outside. We carry from wherever it sits — upstairs, back yard, side alley, storage locker. There is no charge for it.
  • Do not take furniture apart. We bring the tools. Disassembly is included.
  • Do not clean anything. We sweep up afterwards.
  • Do not sort into perfect categories. Sorting happens at our end.

Access details worth mentioning when you book

These are what actually determine how long a job takes and how many people we send:

  • Which floor, and whether there is a lift
  • Stairs — how many flights, and whether there is a turn at the bottom
  • Gate width, if access is round the side
  • Parking — permit zone, metered, narrow street, or a gated community that needs us on a list
  • Anything unusually heavy: safes, pianos, weight stacks, hot tubs, slate pool tables

On the day

Someone should be there at the start to point at what goes and confirm the price, but you do not have to supervise the whole job. Most people go back to work once the quote is agreed. If you cannot be there at all, that is workable too — plenty of jobs run on authorisation and access details alone, with photos sent afterwards.
