You do not need to be in a mapped fire hazard zone for this to matter — even flatland properties near hillsides, canyons or open lots benefit from clearing what a wind-driven ember could catch. Why this August is worth taking seriously
The 2026 season started quieter than 2025 statewide, but fire agencies have been clear that a slow first half does not predict the second half. Vegetation moisture drops fast under sustained summer heat, and dry grass carries fire quickly between shrubs, trees and structures. The conditions that turn a small ignition into a fast-moving fire — low humidity, strong offshore winds, months of drying — are exactly the conditions building through late summer.
The checklist
- Clear the first 5 feet around the structure. Dead plants, dry leaves, pine needles, stored firewood and anything combustible pressed against a wall, deck or under-eave space. This zone matters most — it is what determines whether embers landing near the house actually catch.
- Clean the roof and gutters. Dry leaf litter in a gutter is one of the most common ways a house ignites from embers that land nowhere near the main fire.
- Clear under decks and crawl spaces. Stored boxes, old furniture and yard debris tucked under a deck are fuel sitting exactly where you do not want it.
- Thin dense shrubs and low branches. Fire moves from ground vegetation into tree canopy through anything that bridges the two — a shrub touching a low branch is a ladder.
- Clear the garage and side yard of anything you have been meaning to get rid of. Piled cardboard, old paint cans, scrap wood — the stuff that accumulates in every garage is also fuel.
What to do with what you clear
