Making Room for Fall Decor: What to Clear Out First
Pumpkin patches and Oktoberfest season are already starting across Southern California. Before the fall and Halloween bins come out of storage, here is what usually needs to go first.
Fall and Halloween season is already underway across Southern California — Oktoberfest celebrations start this week, and pumpkin patches open before the month is out. Which means it is also the week a lot of garages and closets turn into a game of storage tetris, trying to fit the fall bins in without a plan for what comes out.
The annual swap problem
Most garages do not have room for both the full summer setup and the full fall setup at the same time. Pool toys, camping gear, and patio overflow are still sitting exactly where they landed in June, and the fall and holiday bins need that same shelf space. Something has to actually leave, not just get pushed to a different corner.
What usually needs to go first
- Pool and beach gear that will not see use again this year. Deflated floats, a cracked kiddie pool, sand toys the kids outgrew — this is the easiest category to be honest about.
- Camping or outdoor gear that did not get used this summer. If it did not come out all season, it is worth asking whether it earns the space for another year.
- Last year’s decorations that did not survive storage. Cracked plastic pumpkins, a strand of lights that will not turn on, a scarecrow that has seen better days — these take up bin space without adding anything back.
- Patio furniture that did not make it through summer. A chair or table that is already broken is not going to improve by spending fall in the garage too.
A decent rule for the bins themselves
If a decoration needed replacing last year and got a temporary fix, this is the year it actually gets replaced instead of stored again. Clearing that out now is easier than doing it next September with an even more crowded garage.
If it turns into a bigger clearout
Once the summer gear comes out, it is common to find a few other things that have been waiting for an excuse — that is a fine time to just clear the whole space in one trip instead of two separate ones. We book same-day across LA, Orange County and San Diego, with a firm price quoted on site before anything is loaded.
