Where to Donate Furniture in Los Angeles
Several LA charities collect furniture free — if it meets their condition rules and their truck is in your area. Here is who takes what, and what gets declined.
Goodwill Southern California, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and a number of local shelters all accept donated furniture in Los Angeles, and several will collect free. The constraints are condition, category and timing — free collection is typically scheduled two to four weeks out and depends on a truck being in your area.
Who takes what
- Goodwill Southern California — furniture, housewares, clothing, working electronics. Drop-off centres across the county, with collection available in some areas.
- Salvation Army — furniture and household goods, with a long-established free collection programme. Proceeds fund their rehabilitation centres.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — furniture, appliances, building materials, cabinetry, fixtures and doors. The best option for renovation leftovers, which most charities will not take.
- Local shelters and transitional housing — often need specific items urgently, particularly beds, dressers and dining sets. Worth calling directly.
What gets declined, and why
Charities are selective because health law and resale reality both constrain them. Commonly declined:
- Upholstery that is torn, heavily stained or has any pest exposure — California health rules prevent resale of these
- Cribs and car seats that do not meet current safety standards
- Anything under recall
- Particleboard furniture that has been disassembled, which rarely survives reassembly
- Mattresses, at most organisations, for the same health reasons
If a piece is genuinely worn out, donating it just transfers your disposal cost onto a charity. Recycling is the better outcome.
The timing problem
Free charity collection is real and worth using — but it is scheduled around their routes, which typically means two to four weeks. If you have a move-out date, a close of escrow, or a tenant arriving, that gap is exactly where good furniture ends up in a skip.
That is the gap we fill. We collect on your schedule, deliver to a partner charity, sort donatable from non-donatable at pickup so you get one visit rather than two, and email you the itemised receipt.
Your receipt and the tax side
You receive an itemised receipt from the receiving charity. For US federal purposes, total non-cash donations above $500 require IRS Form 8283 with your return, and single items valued over $5,000 generally need a qualified appraisal. We provide the receipt and the itemisation; valuation is a conversation for your tax preparer.
